Meet the panelists
We're excited to welcome three local employers who will share their tips and tricks for international students.
Several panelists are originally from outside Canada and will share their experience in the Canadian job market.
Originally from Mexico City, Mariana worked in the hospitality industry for eight years before transitioning to the non-profit sector at Makesense Americas.
She started with administrative tasks and helped establish the organization's HR department, sparking her passion for HR. Mariana then moved to Canada to pursue a Post-Degree Diploma in Business Administration - HR Management & Leadership at Camosun College.
She currently works part-time as a People and Culture Coordinator at Redbrick, where she fosters a positive and inclusive work environment.
Emily holds a B.A. in Sociology and Social Anthropology from Dalhousie University, along with professional development in the career field, including Brainstorm’s Career Leadership Academy and certification as a Gallup Strengths Coach.
She brings over five years’ experience in the field, including three years as a Campus Recruiter and Early Talent Recruiter with BMO and two years as the Volunteer Manager and Advisor with Volunteer Victoria.
In her most recent role with BMO, she developed and implemented a comprehensive campus recruitment strategy, provided guidance on the early talent landscape and market trends, and conducted presentations and workshops for external partners and internal student experience programming.
Emily currently works as a Career Educator with UVic Continuing Studies, having joined our team in Nov 2024. She is excited to share this experience and industry knowledge with UVic students, with the goal of increasing their employability.
Kabir Hosein is the Director of Strategic Initiatives at Sport for Life. A father of four very active kids and from the Caribbean, Kabir was a leader in the Athletics Association and Olympic movement in Trinidad and Tobago.
Since joining Sport for Life, he has been an integral part of the organization’s management, bringing his experiences in sport and physical activity as a Newcomer to Canada into his work.
Kabir takes time to build relationships and co-create initiatives that reflect his values of “physical activity and sport for everyone can create a sense of belonging.”
Roopam is an HR professional with over seven years of experience across various industries. She holds an MBA in Human Resources and a Post-Degree Diploma in HR Management & Leadership.
Roopam began her career in India at Wipro, advancing to Assistant Manager in HR.
After relocating to Canada, she joined Redbrick as a People and Culture Generalist, specializing in recruitment, talent management, and fostering a thriving company culture with a people-first approach.
Attend the preparation workshop on February 11
If you're nervous about how to talk with employers at the February 13 event, we're here to help.
We're holding a workshop on February 11 from 1 to 2 p.m., where you can practice your networking skills in a fun and friendly environment. The more you practice, the easier it becomes.
This preparation workshop will be held in person in the Career Services office (Campus Services Building, room 110 - off the bus loop and to the left of the Bookstore entrance).
