Tri-Agency Grant Extension Requests

December 06, 2024

The government recently updated the , clarifying that requests for grant extensions will not be considered after the end date of a grant has passed.

Previously, the Tri-Agency did not strictly adhere to this guideline and would consider many requests, even after the end date of the grant. This will no longer be the case.

 Key details:

  • Requests for grant extensions must be submitted during the final year of the grant's authority period (which includes any automatic extension period), and before the grant’s end date. Extension requests cannot be made earlier than in the final year of the grant.
  • The Tri-Agency has provided a window of opportunity to request extensions for grants ending on or after April 1, 2024, and institutions may submit extension requests until December 31, 2024. This exception will not be extended beyond this date. After this date, requests for extensions submitted after the grant end date will no longer be considered.
  • If the extension is not approved, the grant recipient will have three months to settle all expenses. Expenses must have been incurred prior to the grant end date.

For full details and conditions, refer to in the TAGFA.

Action Required:

We strongly encourage all grant recipients to submit extension requests well in advance of the grant end date.
