Applied Portfolio Management Program

Get investment education, hands-on experience and industry exposure in this unique program for third-year business and economics students.

Participants manage a pool of real money in close coordination with industry and academic support. The intensive program will give you applied investment management education, skills and experience.

This program is a collaboration between CFA Society Victoria, CFA Institute, UVic Continuing Studies, UVic Economics and the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Program structure

You’ll start by taking applied investment management, a non-credit course delivered by UVic Continuing Studies each November-April. The course is taught by practicing industry professionals and focuses on the application of theoretical finance to real-life scenarios.

After completing the course, you’ll apply to become a portfolio manager of the APMP fund. Once accepted, you’ll start a directed studies course overseen by an investment advisory committee of industry professionals and UVic faculty members.

How to apply

2. Video Expression of Interest - Please include a short (2-3 minute) video of your "elevator pitch". This should include:

  • Why you would be a positive addition to the AIMC
  • Your interest in finance and investing
  • An example of your work ethic and/or ability to multi-task
  • 1-2 extracurricular activities, volunteer experiences or involvements with student clubs and how they have influenced you as a person
  • A discussion on a stock you think is a good buy (or sell) and the rationale for it

Investment Advisory Committee

Jennifer Coulson, Vice President, ESG integration, BCI

Jennifer joined British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) in January 2012 as a manager of shareholder engagement. She is currently vice president, environmental, governance and social (ESG) integration, overseeing the proxy voting and engagement with issuers on ESG risks. Before that, she was at NEI Investments for 10 years working in the ESG field.

Jennifer holds a BA from the University of Western Ontario (UWO) in geography and a Master of Environmental Studies from York University.

Raymond Aoki, CIM®, Treasurer, University of Victoria & University of Victoria Foundation

Raymond Aoki has worked at the University of Victoria since 2023. In addition to being the Treasurer of the University of Victoria and the University of Victoria Foundation. he is a member of the Investment Administration Committee for the University of Victoria Staff Pension Plan.

Raymond holds the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM®) designation issued by the Canadian Securities Institute, and a Bachelor of Science in Statistics degree from the University of British Columbia. He also volunteers with the annual CAUBO Conference as a member of the coordination team for the Treasury & Investment Functional Seminar.

Kenton Freitag, CFA, Director, Credit Research, BCI

Kenton is responsible for providing credit opinions and research to all asset classes at BCI. Before that, he worked as a corporate credit analyst for S&P in Toronto, a loan officer for Export Development Canada in Ottawa and a policy analyst for the Department of Finance in Ottawa.

Kenton holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Queen’s University, a Master of Economics from UBC and a CFA designation. He is on the board of directors of the Canadian Bond Investors Association.

Jordie Hutchinson, CFA, Portfolio Manager, BCI

Jordie joined BCI in 2007 as an analyst in consulting and client services. He moved to public equities in 2008 where he served in several different roles, most recently as a portfolio manager on the Canadian equity team.

Jordie graduated from the University of Calgary with a BCom in finance and a BA in economics. He received his CFA designation in 2011.

 

Johann Kuntze, MA, CFA, Senior Economic and Investment Analyst, BCI

Before joining BCI's investment risk, strategy and research team, Johann was part of BCI's consulting and client services department, helping clients with more than $19 billion in assets meet their investment goals.

Johann has over 10 years of experience in economic analysis and forecasting. Johann holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees in economics from the University of Victoria, as well as the CFA designation.

 

Dr. Michael King, Professor, University of Victoria

 Michael has worked at UVic since 2019. He is the Lansdowne Chair in Finance, at the Gustavson School of Business. Prior to joining UVic, he was at Western University’s Ivey Business School. Before joining academia, he worked in investment banking in Zurich, New York and London from 1990-1998, and central banking in Ottawa and Basel from 2001-2011. Michael holds a PhD from the London School of Economics as well as a CFA designation.

His research focuses on climate finance, sustainable finance, FinTech, banking and corporate finance. He has taught corporate finance and valuation to undergraduates, MBAs and executives.

Dr. Marco Cozzi, Professor, University of Victoria

Marco has worked at UVic since 2015. He is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Economics department. Prior to joining UVic, he was an Assistant Professor at Queen’s University. He holds a PhD from the University College London, and an MSc from Bocconi University.

His areas of expertise are Macroeconomics, Fiscal Policy, and Business Cycle Fluctuations. His research has appeared in outlets such as The Journal of Monetary Economics, The Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, The Journal of Macroeconomics, and Economics Letters. He teaches courses in Macroeconomics and Computational Economics at all levels (from undergraduates, to Masters, to PhDs).
