The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Victoria is proud to announce that two outstanding members of the Department of Geography have been recognized at the 2024 Reach Awards for their exceptional contributions to teaching, student mentorship, and equity advocacy.

Gillian Krezoski, an instructor in the Department of Geography, has received the Gilian Sherwin Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching. Known for her commitment to experiential education, Krezoski emphasizes practical, hands-on learning to provide students with marketable skills upon graduation. She has developed a nationally unique field school, led the creation of multiple open educational resources used across British Columbia, and secured over $30,000 in teaching grants to improve accessibility through field-based and community-engaged learning. Students commend her for creating a safe, inclusive space for learning and connection, and for her passion that leaves a lasting impact both in and outside the classroom.

Dr. CindyAnn Rose-Redwood has been honoured with the Provost’s Advocacy and Activism Award in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. A longtime advocate within the department, Dr. Rose-Redwood has led transformative initiatives, including establishing the department’s first equity and diversity committee and creating its first anti-racism course. Her mentorship of visible minority students and leadership as International Student Liaison has helped shape a more inclusive academic community. Her advocacy has been recognized with several high-profile awards, including the 2023 American Association of Geographers Diversity and Inclusion Award and the 2024 Social Sciences EDI Award.
