Creating liveable and inclusive cities, new pilot series

UVic geography and the Division of Continuing Studies is offering current students and professionals a focused on urban and regional planning. The topics align with the professional competencies outlined by the Canadian Institute of Planners.
“There is currently a high demand for professional planners in the workforce, and this series of urban and regional planning workshops aims to provide much-needed skills for professionals working in the field,” says Reuben Rose-Redwood, associate dean academic, social sciences.
“In particular, we are developing these urban planning courses with three primary audiences in mind: professionals in planning and related fields seeking to enhance their skillset, students interested in exploring the field of urban planning as a possible career, and community members aiming to inform themselves about planning-related issues,” adds Rose-Redwood.
The Urban and Regional Planning Series launches in February 2025 with workshops and lectures on timely topics that enhance the skills of professional planners, university students, municipal councils and staff, and those working in community contexts. Each year new workshop topics will be offered on current trends in the field of urban and regional planning.
Some potential workshop topics include:
- Project Management and Process Improvement for Planning
- Lean Sigma for Planning
- Pro-Forma for Land Use
- DAPR Process Implementation in Action
- Engagement Strategies for Planning
- Sustainable Aesthetics in Building Design
- Climate Change Adaptation and Resiliency
The topics in the Spring 2025 sessions apply to a wide range of fields such as urban and regional planning, community planning, social and cultural planning, community engagement and development, heritage planning and more. The three pilot workshops include: ; ; .
