Her background as a counsellor, educator, facilitator, and improvisor uniquely position Karissa to cultivate experiences and programs that build trust, enhance engagement, and strengthen teams and communities. As Director of Organization Development and Learning Services, Karissa works with colleagues to design and deliver programs, projects and services that make UVic a great place to work. This includes providing oversight to leadership development, and employee learning, recognition, engagement and conflict fluency alongside other strategic HR initiatives. In and outside of work Karissa enjoys playing with words and can often be found dabbling in the production and performance of written, spoken, musical, and comedic arts.

Orvis has been a grateful guest on the territories of the Esquimalt, Songhees and WSÁNEĆ peoples for the last 4 years. They are descended from Irish, English, Scottish and German people that settled around the Great Lakes and grew up in Toronto. Like many trans people, Orvis has lived experience with how data can lead to erasure and harm and use this passion to guide their work. Orvis uses equity-centered analytics to provide advice, guidance and consultation to improve people-related decisions and advance UVic’s priorities. They also contribute to the renewal of Human Resources data systems and processes to address systemic barriers in areas such as policy, practice, culture and organizational climate. When not nerding out about data, Orvis sews button-up shirts, picks fruit, and plays table top role playing games.

Orvis has been a grateful guest on the territories of the Esquimalt, Songhees and WSÁNEĆ peoples for the last 4 years. They are descended from Irish, English, Scottish and German people that settled around the Great Lakes and grew up in Toronto. Like many trans people, Orvis has lived experience with how data can lead to erasure and harm and use this passion to guide their work. Orvis uses equity-centered analytics to provide advice, guidance and consultation to improve people-related decisions and advance UVic’s priorities. They also contribute to the renewal of Human Resources data systems and processes to address systemic barriers in areas such as policy, practice, culture and organizational climate. When not nerding out about data, Orvis sews button-up shirts, picks fruit, and plays table top role playing games.

Karissa has been working, playing, and living on the traditional territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən people since 2010 and has been part of the UVic community since 2012. Her background as a counsellor, educator, facilitator, and improvisor uniquely position Karissa to cultivate experiences and programs that build trust, enhance engagement, and strengthen teams and communities. As Director of Organization Development and Learning Services, Karissa works with colleagues to design and deliver programs, projects and services that make UVic a great place to work. This includes providing oversight to leadership development, and employee learning, recognition, engagement and conflict fluency alongside other strategic HR initiatives. In and outside of work Karissa enjoys playing with words and can often be found dabbling in the production and performance of written, spoken, musical, and comedic arts.

Orvis Starkweather, People and Equity Analytics Advisor (they/them)
Orvis has been a grateful guest on the territories of the Esquimalt, Songhees and WSÁNEĆ peoples for the last 4 years. They are descended from Irish, English, Scottish and German people that settled around the Great Lakes and grew up in Toronto. Like many trans people, Orvis has lived experience with how data can lead to erasure and harm and use this passion to guide their work. Orvis uses equity-centered analytics to provide advice, guidance and consultation to improve people-related decisions and advance UVic’s priorities. They also contribute to the renewal of Human Resources data systems and processes to address systemic barriers in areas such as policy, practice, culture and organizational climate. When not nerding out about data, Orvis sews button-up shirts, picks fruit, and plays table top role playing games.

Work Life Consulting, WLC
Work Life Consultants (WLC) provide support in the following ways:
- Providing consultation, guidance and coaching in the areas of health related absence management, return to work, accommodation and disability management.
- Working with leaders and supervisors to develop and implement best practices consistent with university policy and procedures, collective agreements, human rights legislation and case law.
- Facilitating, negotiating and implementing a variety of return to work and/or medical accommodation plans for employees with disabilities.
- Managing the university’s central accommodation fund.
- Collaborating with specialists within and outside of HR (e.g. HR consultants, Benefits, Labour Relations, HRIS, EQHR) to help the leaders achieve a positive and productive outcome in the workplace.
- Communicating and liaising with stakeholders, including employees, union representatives, leaders, third party insurance carriers (LTD, WorkSafeBC and ICBC), rehabilitation providers, physicians, and lawyers.
- Collaborating and coordinating with university departments (e.g. OHSE, Athletics and Recreation Services, EQHR) and external resources (EFAP programs, community resources) to increase employee awareness and access to healthy lifestyles, behaviours and coping skills.
