Craigdarroch Castle
Constructed between 1887-1890, Craigdarroch Castle was built as the home of coal baron Robert Dunsmuir. The wealth he amassed is reflected in the Castle’s four floors of exquisite stained glass, intricate woodwork and lavish Victorian-era furnishings. Robert passed away before the completion of Craigdarroch. Only his wife Joan, three of their daughters and two orphaned grandchildren ever lived on the original 28-acre estate.
After Joan Dunsmuirs death in 1908, Craigdarroch Castle changed hands a number of times, seeing use as a military hospital, a college, an administrative building for the Victoria school board, a music conservatory, and finally, a museum.
Today, Craigdarroch Castle is owned and operated by the Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society, a non-profit charitable organization whose mission is to protect, restore, and preserve the Castle while bringing its stories to life.
Our Volunteers are asked to perform two distinct duties: The first is to act as a docent, providing our visitors with an educational and enjoyable experience. The second is to act as a steward, protecting the fabric of The Castle and its artifacts from damage.
We ask potential volunteers to commit to coming in for one shift per week, for a period of at least six months. Volunteer shifts are a minimum of two hours in length and should at the same time on the same day each week. There is flexibility for missed days and vacations after a probationary period.
Please forward your application to our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteers@thecastle.ca
We look forward to hearing from you!
