We will email admission decisions by January 10, 2025 (we may reach out to you earlier with any possible questions). We ask that you confirm your interest as soon as possible after you get admitted. Yet, ultimately your true commitment to participate happens later in January, when you register and pay the first non-refundable installment of $1050 towards the overall EU Study Tour fees. The registration page clarifies further.
Grants and available funding
Admission to the field school means that that you are automatically on track to win grant money through UVic European Studies worth $1,350 (unless you indicate to decline the EUS grants when you apply).
Specifically, you will win these grants if you get admitted to the EU Study Tour and you subsequently make sure to: (i) pay all the tour fees on time, (ii) complete all the mandatory course requirements for EUS 390A on time, (iii) you timely provide/sign expense reports as applicable, and (iv) you satisfy any other conditions communicated to you in the admission email. [For example, you may get admitted conditional on you successfully completing the cross-listed course EUS 311/POLI 311 (CRN: 21500) in the Spring term.]
If you satisfy the requirements, the EUS grants will normally be paid out to you in July or August. There are additional funding opportunities, including a $500 grant from UVic's Student International Activities Fund. It is up to you to find such opportunities and apply for them. UVic coop has a good webpage listing funding opportunities.
FAQ
1. I am interested, but only took EUS 100 [Or EUS 200, or POLI 211]. Should I even bother to apply?
A: Would next year work just as well for you? We plan on continuing to offer the program every year. If you really want to go this year, then the answer is yes, your application may be successful even with just EUS 100. In this case admission will be conditional on you completing another EUS course, likely EUS 311/POLI311. Please, read the questions below as well, especially Question #2.
2. Am I sufficiently prepared to participate in the EU study tour?
A: this question is close to the question above, but not exactly the same. A sufficiently strong background in European Studies is essential for the EU Study Tour. Successful UVic applicants typically have completed at least one of the following by the time that they leave for Europe:
-
- A. Both EUS 100 and EUS 200
- B. EUS 311 or POLI 311
- C. EUS 300 or POLI 379
A: We wrote “by the time that they leave to Europe” above and it’s relevant. We do not necessarily require one of A-C, yet, as indicated above, a sufficiently strong background in European Studies is essential for participation in the EU Study Tour.
- You may have other courses from UVic or another institution that are relevant to the study tour. If so, please email eustudytour@uvic.ca to discuss further.
- You are still be able to register in EUS 200 and/or EUS 311 which are both offered in the Spring term. For example, if you have completed EUS 100 or POLI 211, then indicate when you apply if you are happy to take EUS 200 and/or EUS 311 in the Spring term. These classes make a big difference in terms of relevant background knowledge.
