Tips for Success

One tip that I would offer new international students starting their program at UVic is... Learn about your academic and community resources before you need them. In your first few weeks of study, take some time to get acquainted with the on-campus resources UVic has to offer—Student Counselling, Academic Advising, the Centre for Accessible Learning, and the Peer Support Centre are just a few of many places students can access support. That way, you know where to go and who to ask for help when challenges arise.

One of the best ways for international students to get connected during their time at UVic would be… Go out of your way to explore and try new things—Victoria is a city with so many places and opportunities to explore, whether it’s a wilderness hike or a new sport/hobby in the downtown. The UVic Global Community is also a great resource if you’re looking to get connected!

Student Success Tip: Get in touch with your sense of curiosity—about yourself, your friends, your classes, your community at large, the land and the world around you, and with that in mind go forward with an open mind and an open heart.

About

I spent my childhood moving frequently across Canada and have been fortunate to live in so many interesting and beautiful places with such close connection to the wilderness. I moved to Victoria in 2015 and completed my undergraduate degree at UVic in English Literature. I’ve been here ever since, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to continue living and working on the Lək̓ʷəŋən and WSÁNEĆ Territories.

My background is in Student Housing here at UVic, where I focused my work in community development and student advocacy. I also have several years of work experience in harm reduction, housing, and outreach for people who are unhoused. I am also a visual artist and a musician, and I am very passionate about the role of art and music in intercultural connection, community, and memory. I am so excited to be back at UVic and working with international students to continue building those relationships, communities, and support systems that are so important for having a positive international experience.

My mother desperately wanted to name me Sturgeon (like the fish). Clearly, my dad did not agree.
