Anand Student Scholarship

In November 1993, Khun Anand Panyarachun was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by UVic. Dr. Anand was Thailand’s first Ambassador to Canada (1969-72) and twice Prime Minister of Thailand, who is widely credited with restoring stability to Thai society and the country’s economy following the February 1991 military coup and the bloody May 1992 demonstrations in Bangkok. As part of his visit to UVic, Dr. Anand headlined a CAPI symposium focusing on democratic directions in Thailand (Dr. Anand is pictured above with long-time CAPI friend Jittiya Dearden and Thai students studying at UVic; photo courtesy past CAPI Director Bill Neilson).

**Description:** 2021 Anand Student Scholarship winner Israporn (Grace) Sethanant, a PhD student of Earth and Ocean Sciences, whose research involves utilizing radar satellite images to understand the physical processes of earthquakes.

Eligibility: Registered Thai UVic graduate student in good standing. Students must be returning to Thailand upon completion of their studies at UVic.

Fund guidelines

One award of approximately CDN$1,500 will be granted per year to help cover tuition expenses.

This is a single time fund - successful applicants are not usually eligible for successive grants or awards from the Fund.

Financial reports - A progress report must be submitted by the end of the academic year in question. All reports are to be submitted to the Office of the Director, Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives, Sedgewick Building, Room C128. These reports will be forwarded to the Fund's co-directors, H.E. Anand Panyarachun and the president of the University of Victoria.
