Information for students
UVic students who wish to be considered for a work study job must meet the eligibility requirements.
- The work study program is available September to April each year.
- There is no work study during the summer term (May-August).
Registration requirements
- undergraduate students: 4.5 units for credit in each term
- students with a permanent disability: 3.0 units for credit in each term
- graduate students: as defined by Graduate Admissions and Records
- international students must meet the eligibilty requirements to legally work in Canada, including full-time registration as per the UVic calendar definition (with limited exceptions)
Furthermore, work study participants must not drop below the minimum registration requirements at any time between September and April.
Eligibility is based on demonstrated financial need, students must:
- Complete a work study application
- Wait a minimum of 4 full business days to receive the status of application for eligibility, by email, to their preferred UVic email address.
Eligible students
Students authorized to participate in the work study program will be sent an email informing them of their eligible hours and the study period for which the authorization is valid. Authorized students may apply for current job postings. Please be sure to advise the supervisor of your pre-approved work study eligible hours at the time of application, interview and/or hire.
- The student may only commence work once the authorization has been received by Student Awards and Financial Aid.
- The eligible student may only accept and work in one work study job at a time.
Job posting for the 2025/2026 will be made available in September 2025.
Social Insurance Number
All students must have a valid Social Insurance Number before commencing work in a work study job. Apply for your SIN in person at a Service Canada Centre. The Service Canada Centre in Victoria is located at 1401 Douglas Street. If you have the right documents, you will get a SIN during your visit.

How to apply
To access the 2025/2026 work study application:
- Go to and Sign in to UVic using your UVic Netlink ID.
- After signing in, click on Online tools
- Click on Student Services on the left-side menu.
- Click on the Finances tab.
- Select Awards and Financial Aid.
- Select the option which best applies to you:
- If you are starting a new work study application for the first time this academic year click Apply for awards, scholarships, bursaries and work study.
- If you have already started a work study application this academic year (even if you haven’t submitted it yet) click View My Applications
- For Year, select 2025/2026.
- For Period select Winter.
- Continue to follow the prompts to apply for work study.
- Be sure to read all instructions as you complete each section of the application and click Submit Application as your last step to ensure your application is submitted.
- Eligibility results will be emailed to students. Results will be emailed starting late August and then on a 4 business day rotation after the first day of classes (September 3, 2025).
Rates of pay
The University of Victoria Human Resources department and CUPE 951 meet annually to review and determine the employee group for each job posting. Work Study jobs have been classified as either Non-Union or CUPE 951. Each work study job posting indicates the appropriate employee group.
- The 2025/2026 Work Study Program pays $19.00 per hour, including 4% vacation pay.
- Work Study students filling jobs deemed CUPE will be charged a one-time $10.00 initiation fee and 50 cents per pay cheque for other union fees.
- An additional 1.79% will also be deducted on total earnings for membership dues. The Work Study Program will pay the 1.79% cost on total earnings for membership dues.
- When completing a work study timesheet, please choose the correct employee group for the job. If you are not sure, please contact your supervisor.
Late submission of timesheets will result in the delay of payment until the next pay period.
