EOS 401

Oceanographic Field School

Methods of data acquisition, study and analysis required for solving oceanographic problems. Includes a field component held at Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre. Focus is on planning, implementing and analyzing a field data set, elucidating the biological, chemical, geological and physical dynamics of coastal waters.

Pre-requisites: three of: EOS/BIOL 311 (Biological Oceanography), EOS 312 (Chemical Oceanography), EOS 313 (Geological Oceanography), or a Physical Oceanography course (either EOS 314 or EOS 431) – pre-reqs will be strictly enforced

You do not need to pay the deposit at the same time as completing the expression of interest, as long as both are received by this date.

Registration: An invitation to register will be sent to participating students by email.

Refunds: All refund requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of SEOS administration.

  • Deposits will ONLY be considered for refund under the following circumstances:
    • the student is not offered a seat in the course due to capacity
    • extenuating extreme circumstances (i.e. medical issue, death in the family, etc.)
  • Participation fees over and above the deposit will be considered for refund under the following circumstances:
    • extenuating extreme circumstances (i.e. medical issue, death in the family, etc.)
    • failure of a pre-requisite course

No refunds will be considered in the case of conflicts with work schedules or personal choice circumstances

Accommodation and Board:

The course will begin with two days of planning and preparation at the University of Victoria, followed by a week at BMSC where time will be divided between collecting samples by boat in Barkley Sound and sample analysis/project work on land. Following the week in Bamfield, students will return to UVic to finish sample analysis, data processing, and project reports. At Bamfield, accommodations will be dormitory style and meals will be provided. While at UVic, students will be expected to make their own arrangements for accommodation and meals.

Transportation:

The department will provide transportation to and from BMSC. Travel will be either from UVic to Bamfield via passenger bus, or from UVic to Port Alberni via passenger bus, and then from Port Alberni to BMSC by ferry (MV Frances Barkley).
