Presidential Appointment

In January, the Board of Governors struck a committee to undertake an appointment process in anticipation of Dr. Kevin Hall’s first term as President and Vice-Chancellor ending on October 31, 2025.

The appointment committee met 11 times over the early months of 2025. After reviewing its terms of reference, the committee acquainted itself with the requirements of the President’s role. To that end, it reviewed the candidate criteria and position description developed during the last search, met with the individuals who could provide perspective on the role, and reflected on UVic’s requirements for future leadership. After considering the information and input received, the committee recommended updates to the candidate criteria and position description to the Board of Governors. Having reviewed those updated documents, Dr. Hall confirmed in February that he wished to be considered for reappointment. The committee carried out an intensive and multi-faceted process to consider whether Dr. Hall should be recommended for reappointment.

As provided for in the procedures, the committee assessed Dr. Hall’s past performance in the context of the future direction of the university, taking into account: the criteria and objectives established for the President; the annual goals approved by the Board of Governors and the Board’s assessment of performance relative to those goals; a formal meeting with the President; his written statement of his stewardship and his online presentation to the university community; input from the university community; and advisory ballots of regular faculty and staff (see below for results). The appointment committee also sought and obtained confidential input from over a dozen references from government, business partners, and community leaders in British Columbia and across Canada.

On April 23, 2025, the Board of Governors accepted the appointment committee’s recommendation to reappoint Dr. Hall for a second five-year term as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Victoria.

Reappointment of Dr. Kevin Hall

Dear faculty and staff,

In January, the Board of Governors struck a committee to undertake an appointment process in anticipation of Dr. Kevin Hall’s first term as President and Vice-Chancellor ending on Oct. 31, 2025. Following Dr. Hall’s confirmation in February that he wished to be considered for reappointment, the committee carried out an intensive and multi-faceted process to consider whether Dr. Hall should be recommended for reappointment. I extend my sincere thanks to everyone who took time to participate in this process.

I am pleased to inform you that the Board of Governors has accepted the appointment committee’s recommendation to reappoint Dr. Hall for a second five-year term as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Victoria.

Recent years have been incredibly challenging for the university, and the impacts have been felt by all members of the university community. Through these challenges, President Hall has demonstrated that he is a values-based leader who is deeply committed to the University of Victoria’s outstanding faculty and staff, students and to our local community. Through the renewal of our strategic plan, establishment of the Vice-President Indigenous position and support for implementation of the Indigenous Plan, and global engagement efforts, he has led the continued pursuit of our collective goals. He has steered the university through difficult financial times, maintaining a focus on the purpose and value of our comprehensive research-intensive university. It is critical that this work continues in his second term.

The Board is grateful to the appointment committee for its efforts. Please join me in congratulating President Hall on his reappointment.

Sincerely,

Paul Ramsey
Chair, Board of Governors
University of Victoria
