Recruitment and retention

Annually, the University provides an Academic Staffing, Recruitment and Vacancies Report to the Board of Governors. The following information is from the 2023/24 report presented to the Board in September 2024.

Faculty and librarian FTEs

In 2023/24, UVic employed 891 FTE faculty and librarians in filled budgeted positions. This is above the 10-year average of 861 FTE.

Equity and diversity

UVic actively encourages applications from members of groups experiencing barriers to equity so that we can increase the diversity of our faculty and librarian complement.

EQHR surveys new employees to track the university's progress towards achieving an equitable workforce, which helps us to identify areas where we have been successful and where improvements are necessary. Through the survey:

  • 108 faculty identified as a visible minority;
  • 36 self-declared as Indigenous (an increase of 38% in five years); and
  • 28 identified as having a disability or disabilities.

Resignations and departures

The five-year average rate of faculty and librarian resignation is less than 1%. The primary reasons provided for departure are health and family circumstances, followed by other employment opportunities.

For benchmarking, the Canadian Association of Business Officers () and Universite de Quebec publishes a Key Management Indicators dashboard that combines the Financial Information of Universities and Colleges, the University and College Academic Staff System and the Postsecondary Student Information, all collected by Statistics Canada annually.

As part of those dashboards, reports on student-faculty ratios are provided, including those for all students, undergraduate students, graduate students and within specific fields of study.

Budget and costing

On April 10, the first full-day session, the AVP Academic Resource Planning presented on UVic's budget and benchmarking. The PPT included the provincial and national post-secondary budget landscape, funded enrolments, highlights from the Planning and Budget Framework 2025/26, and resources to support decision makers (e.g., dashboards).

Also on April 10, the AVP Finance and Operations presented on compensation and costings. The PPT included information on provincial grant funding, compensation base, compensation mandate, and the costing process.

Revenues

Approximately 88% of the university's operating revenue is from two sources: the government grant, which accounts for 56% of operating revenues, and student fees (tuition), which accounts for 32%. This reflects the university's education mission, and through responsible financial stewardship we are accountable to the people of British Columbia and students.

Expenses

Approximately 80% of the university's operating budget goes toward salaries and benefits.

Reflecting UVic's mission, 79% of the operating budget is allocated to academic areas including faculties, research, library, student financial aid, and student services, with the remaining 21% allocated to maintain and operate facilities and for support functions.

Expenses by function have remained consistent over time and comparable to peer Canadian post-secondary institutions.
