What you will learn
University of Victoria's Biomedical Engineering, in partnership with the Gustavson School of Business and the School of Biomedical Engineering at the University of British Columbia, is pleased to offer the Project Management for Biomedical Device Development program.
This program will help you acquire knowledge and skills in the practical aspects of biomedical device development. You'll gain industry-relevant training in project planning and budget management, intellectual property and regulatory frameworks, and effective and inclusive communication.
This program includes over 35 hours of live, online classes—more than enough to meet the education eligibility requirements of the Certified Associate Project Management (CAPM) or Project Management Professional (PMP®) exams with the Project Management Institute (PMI)—as well as additional asynchronous material.
Course content
The program is divided into 3 modules which cover the following competencies:
1. Project planning and management
- project scoping and stages
- human and financial resources, and time value of money
- development of a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis
2. Intellectual property and regulatory frameworks
- patents, trade secrets, industrial designs and security in the biomedical engineering field
- standards organizations and associated provincial, federal and international agencies
- regulatory frameworks, good laboratory practice (GLP) regulation and certification, biohazard designations
3. Effective communication with stakeholders
- appropriate communication strategies with stakeholders
- effective record keeping, including briefing and situation, background, assessment and recommendation (SBAR) reports
- consultative frameworks, timelines, transparency and confidentiality
- challenging bias, inclusive strategies, current and emerging analytical frameworks for removing barriers and bias
Fees & cancellations
$2,000 (plus tax)
Tuition includes all course materials and a certificate of completion from the UVic Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science.
Cancellations
Full refunds are provided for written cancellations received a minimum of 21 days before the program start date. Cancellations received with less than 21 days notice will be refunded less a $200 administration fee.
Funding
This program is eligible for the which can fund the entire tuition balance of this course.

Amber McMillan is a seasoned leader in communication and stakeholder management, known for her ability to navigate complex conversations with enthusiasm and empathy. With over 25 years of experience in both profit and not-for-profit sectors, she serves as Chief Visionary Officer for Rogers Society and holds leadership positions in various organizations including the local PMI chapter and the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration.
Manu Madhav
Manu Madhav, Assistant Professor at UBC's School of Biomedical Engineering, specializes in the intersection of robotics and neuroscience. His research at Johns Hopkins and UBC focuses on understanding memory and planning in the brain, with applications in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. With expertise in interdisciplinary collaboration, he fosters dialogue between engineers, scientists, and clinicians, emphasizing diverse perspectives in teaching to inspire innovative problem-solving.
